Nicolau van Uden was born in Holland in 1921 and became a naturalized Portuguese citizen in 1975. He graduated in medicine in the University of Vienna and obtained a PhD in the University of Coimbra. He was the Director of the Laboratory of Microbiology, in the Gulbenkian Institute of Science and published about 200 research papers on different topics of yeasts biology. He created the Oeiras Advanced Studies, where he organized between 1969 and 1990, 93 monographic courses of international prestige. He was Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon. Van Uden established in Portugal solid bases for research on yeasts, in which hundreds of researchers have been involved.
