The IRIDA (Integrated Rapid Infectious Disease Analysis) team is developing a genomic epidemiology ontology (GenEpiO) to standardize fields and terms used to describe genomics, lab, clinical and epidemiological data critical for foodborne pathogen outbreak investigations. The use of a common vocabulary will facilitate faster data integration and exchange based on standardized fields, and contribute to quality control and result reporting for the accreditation and validation of clinically implemented genomics pipelines.
Harmonization of the genomic epidemiology ontology can only be achieved by consensus and wide adoption, and international input and expertise is crucial to achieve these goals.
An International Genomic Epidemiology Application Ontology Consortium is now being prepared. If you’d like to join the consortium, or find out more information regarding our goals and activities, please contact us at email@example.com.
