Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biopolymers with properties similar to synthetic plastics and with an important position in the market. PHAs can be produced from wastewater/waste/surplus feedstocks by mixed microbial cultures (MMC). The work presented in this article was pioneer and a step forward in engineering the microbial ecology of MMC PHA producing systems.
