Can wild birds act as reservoirs of extended spectrum beta lactamase producing Escherichia coli? The situation in Portugal.
It is important to point out the urgent need for a better long-term survey of extended spectrum beta lactamase producingemerging phenotypes in parallel in the human and veterinary fields, including wild animals that were also reported as a potential reservoir of resistance genes. The evolution of this type of resistance in wild birds and in general in natural ecosystems is of great importance in human medicine.
